House Guide
Welcome! This is a house guide and it is divided into
several sections: General information, Safety, Troubleshooting, Things to
do and don’t, and Other.
General Information
- In case your flight arrives late and you come to the house late
hours after 11PM then Athena will leave the house light on and the key
under the doormat. Just
enter and make yourself comfortable.
Athena will welcome you the next day.
- The hostess Athena doesn’t speak English however the instructions
are self explanatory and I will be calling you at the house number to
welcome you and go over any questions, or concerns and advise you on
last minute things.
- The house phone line is +30 28250 61583 and is only used for
incoming calls. Please be courteous with the late night calling
since the same phone number rings at both the Guest and the Main
house.
- We provide with one set of linen/towels/blanket per person per week.
If you need extra please bring your own. For any extra requests there
will be a charge. Other charges may include extensive use of the
ac/heating unit.
- You
will need to give Athena 150 Euro
as a security deposit upon arrival which you will get back in full on departure date provided you don’
t damage or break anything at the house during your stay.
- If
you do break a house item you must pay for it.
- Once you arrive to the house the booking is final and there will be
no refunds if you are not satisfied with the place. (Never happens but
be aware of the refund policy).
- The
town of Georgioupolis is 3 kilometers down the hill form the house.
There you can find a doctor, a pharmacy, the police station and
all types of stores and tourist services.
Safety
- In
case of an injury if you need to contact a doctor there is Dr. Goggas
in Giourgoupolis whose office number is 2825061600 which can be dialed
directly from the house phone line. His cell phone is +30 6932645520
and you will need to dial either from your cell phone or a local
payphone. In case you will need a hospital you can go to the main
hospital in Chania 30 km from here heading west. It is a large
facility off the highway on your right hand side visible from far
away. The hospital phone number is 2821027011.
- In case of an emergency please call me at +30 6945000252 or +30
6945135386 or email me at: sxristi@yahoo.com
from an internet cafe on Georgioupolis or Kavros.
The house keeper Athenas' home phone number is +30 28250 61710
but she speaks no English (However her sons do).
- The
swimming pool area must be supervised by an adult when young children
are present or people with special needs. I have signs posted “Children
Under 13 and People with Disabilities Must Be Supervised by an Adult”
- Do
not enter the in pool water during the first 4 hours from the time we
put chemicals to clean the pool. Please do not use the glass but
rather the plastic cups for your drinks around the pool area. If glass
breaks it will be very hard to clean thus very dangerous.
- For
safety reasons the pool shall be used between 10 AM to 10 PM! Pool
light will remain on between 9-11PM similar the fence lights will be
on from 9-11:30 PM. These times may change depending on variance of
dust hours.
- Also
please do not play with the pool lights; I had customer’s children
that were playing with the lights and they pulled them off the sockets
that are in. So please be cautious.
- There
should be no diving in the swimming pool. I have a sign posted “No
Diving Shallow Waters 0.8-1.6 meters”
- You
must watch your step going up or down the staircase on the larger
house. Especially with the last step since it is a little
narrow. Make everybody aware of this, especially young children.
- The
owner is not responsible for injuries, personal damage or theft during
your stay in Crete at the house or elsewhere on the island.
You must be cautious and supervise your children at all times.
- Note
that the roof of the house is off limits to everyone except the
maintenance people. It is
not safe to be on the roof because it doesn’t have a rail.
- Illigal
substances and drugs are not allowed in the house.
- Be
aware for fire as well. During
the summer season the area gets really hot and if you are not careful
any type of fire could be catastrophic.
So please be careful when lighting up the BBQ and when
operating be always on alert.
- There
are two fire extinguishers inside the houses and two outside in case
of emergencies. If
something happens please clear your family immediately out of the
house and use the fire extinguishers and water hoses around the house
and have someone tell Athena to call the fire department.
“Do and Don’t”
- Very
Important! Before
entering the swimming pool all parties must use the pool shower to
rinse any dirt and suntan oil off their body.
When people enter the pool with oils and dirt it contaminates
the water; eventually the water will be unusable and the pool will be
out of commission. Please rinse before entering!!!
- Regarding
pool safety we must
have a max of 5 to 6
persons at a time in the pool.
People can come in an out but keep it at 6 at a time.
- On
the patio there is a small BBQ available for you to use. Please do not
remove it from its location as it may break. Also be careful when
there is a windy day and fire could be possible. Also debris from the
BBQ should stay away from the pool.
- There
is no smoking allowed inside the house. You may use the patio area.
- Please
lock the door when you leave the house.
When at the pool area you must leave the key on the outside
keyhole so you can back get in the house.
Once the door closes you will be locked out if you don’t have
a key. If you leave
the key on the inside keyhole we will not be able to open the door not
even with a spare key; so do not keep the keys on the inside keyhole
when you leave the house.
- In
case you get locked out you could ask Athena to open the door for you.
The phrase in Greek is “CLEEDIA PARAKALO” means house keys
please!
- Very
important: Please do not throw papers in the toilets.
Greek
toilets do not support such use.
If you do they will clog up and you will have a problem with
the sewer line.
- In
case you get lost on your way back to the house, just look for the
mountain that surrounds the lake or ask people to point you towards
the lake. Please be aware that the house is located on the smaller of
the two roads that lead to the Lake Kourna.
You will drive into a small road where you come across a bus
stop-shed with a faded yellow roof.
The location of the house is named Dimitrouliana and the
municipality is called Georgioupolis.
- There
are several supermarkets in the area.
One in Georgioupolis on the downtown square.
The other two are on the main highway as you leave
Georgioupolis and head east towards Herakleon.
A small 3 kilometers drive eastbound will bring you to a BP gas
station with a “green sun” sign.
There you will see both supermarkets and you can begin with
your shopping.
How to use
the appliances
- When
and if using the washing
machine please read the printed instructions provided at the house
by the washing machine. Do not force anything as the door has an
automatic lock and requires for you to be patient. Also pull out the
knob after you choose a program to start a wash.
- Important
instructions about the wall air/heating unit. Please operate using
the remote control provided. Press
the power button once and wait for it to start. The temperature should
be 22-23 degrees Celsius when using the heat option and 20-21 Celsius
when using the air conditioner. Never manually touch or reach to the
ac/heat unit. If things
are not working please notify us. Once again three easy steps: Turn
unit on, set the above temperature, and set it to air or heat and wait
for it up to 5 minutes to start. Please
be patient.
- The television
room has three remote controls:
1)
A Thomson TV remote (to turn on/off the tv, control volume, and
browse Greek channels. You will need to press the “AV” audio visual
button to enable the satellite mode.)
2)
Sumsung Satellite remote (to turn on/off the sat box and browse
through the sat channels. Here there are several channel groups in
English/Italian/European/Arabic and other and you will need to press the
“FAV” favorites button to activate each. Once on the desired list use
the up down keys to change channels.)
3)
DVD/VCR remote. This
is a bit tricky but you will figure it out if you have a dvd or a video
tape to watch. Just turn on device insert tape/DVD and press play. You
will need to be on the “av” mode on the TV.
Troubleshooting
- Once
in a while we may encounter power outage in the area in which case the
emergency lights will come on automatically. At this instance please
be careful coming down the stairs and moving around the house
especially during the night. If you don’t have to move around please
stay put until the power come back on.
- In
case we have power outage the television set will turn off and then
once power returns it will turn on by itself and it may be loud. If
you are sleeping during this time tv set may wake you up.
You may want to turn off the TV using the power button on the
tv set in such instance. Other problems you may encounter with power outage is
the satellite box may need to be reset by turning it off using the
switch on the back of the box. Wait 10 seconds and turn it back on.
Things should be working normal. If you can’t get something working
please just email me.
- In
case of low water pressure don’t panic water should come back to
normal levels after few minutes.
- Use
the shower wisely in order to have hot water for everyone. There is a
solar panel for the hot water and if used appropriately everyone
should have hot water.

- Please
do not open/close the window screens.
They are to remain closed at all times/their purpose is to keep
insects out of the house. They
can tear easily and they are very expensive to replace.
- Be
cautious with pulling the window and/or shower curtains as they easily
come off the hooks when using too much force.
- When
pulling the curtains on the windows please slide them with care so
they don’t come off the hooks or rip.
- Please
turn off lights and appliances when to leaving the house.
Electricity and petroleum is very expensive in Greece and we
will not be able to afford discount rates if people abuse the house.
- If
you do leave jars of honey or cake uncovered you may attract ants or
other insects in the house. Also please use trash bags instead of
dumping foods down the sink. We
don’t want to have plumbing issues.
- Please
be respectful of the property. I
spend a lot of money and hard work building it up. If you break
something at the house you must inform us so we can replace it so the
next group can be satisfied as you were.
You will be charged the full price to replace a damaged or
broken item (if it was your doing).
Other
- The
outside lights are programmed to come on around dusk.
- At
the house I have information on recommended restaurants and sites for
you to explore.
- Also
let us know if you need the “house safe” key for a charge of 10
Euro/week.
- You
give that to Athena and place a check here if you done so à
( ).
- Please
print this copy read it to all of the group members. Understand the
content and sign at the bottom. Then give it to the hostess on your
first day at the house as a signed contract for us to keep.
Thank you,
.
